UAE plans to deliver a sustainable EXPO 2020
UAE plans to deliver a sustainable EXPO unlike any the world has ever seen. They’ve devised an intricate strategy that not only supports the EXPO’s sustainability subtheme, but also the Dubai Plan 2021, the UAE Vision 2021 and the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The strategy will create a meaningful impact in the years to come, even after the end of EXPO. It is based on 4 key objectives:
To leave a legacy of sustainable infrastructure and cutting-edge Sustainability practices
To catalyse Sustainability efforts in Dubai and the UAE
To increase public awareness about and engagement with Sustainability principles and sustainable living
To develop Sustainability answers that are scalable, extending benefits to the wider economy
Expo 2020 aims to divert 85 per cent of all waste from landfill by reducing, reusing, recycling and repurposing – turning waste into everything from fertiliser to souvenir t-shirts.Expo 2020
This sustainable strategy will see the UAE:
Generate clean energy
Reduce water consumption
Promote natural solutions
Minimise our carbon footprint
Use sustainable building materials
Reduce waste
Improve sustainability awareness
We will see 75 per cent of the Expo concourse shaded by green canopies. Moreover, Visitors can enjoy a “variety of walkable spaces and an abundance of landscaped areas that contain mostly local and adaptive species” to protect the flora and fauna of the region “without the use of chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers.”
The depletion of natural resources is also being minimised in the construction phase, emphasising upon “sustainable building materials and a commitment to retain 80 per cent of permanent construction post Expo”.
