Next stop: The Moon
So NASA is planning to take people to the Moon by 2024 with its Artemis program. And although it might seem small, Boeing has now four-fifth assembled the large rocket which will power the new Space Launch System.
The entire spacecraft is 200 feet (60.96 metres) long including engines and fuel tanks. It is the biggest rocket NASA will have built since 140 feet (42.67 metres long Saturn V which took the first human to the Moon.
Naturally a rocket with people takes a lot longer to build. However, given that we have landed on the moon before, and the technology has advanced, this is already a great achievement.
Two months ago the White House directed NASA to speed up its timeline to land humans on the moon. However, others at the agency are concerned about budgets being cut from other programmes to fund Artemis. The NASA administrators have given mixed signals regarding the programme budget.
