Apple’s design chief leaves to form his own company

Is this the start of the end of Apple?

Apple’s design chief Jony Ive, who was the star behind the development of iPhones and other products, is set to leave the tech giant to start his own firm.

Apple announced that he will be leaving later this year "to form an independent design company which will count Apple among its primary clients.

In addition to pursuing personal projects, Ive will continue to work closely "on a range of projects with Apple.”

"Jony is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple's revival cannot be overstated, from 1998's groundbreaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care.”
Tim Cook

Since 1992, British-born Johy Ive has designed not only the iPod, iPhone, iPad and Macbook, but also the revered iOS software system for Apple devices, through close collaboration with Steve Jobs.

Apple’s design team leaders, Evans Hankey and Alan Dye, will report to Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer.

With iPhone sales declining and the company facing antitrust issues, Is this another dent in the future of Apple? Design is after all one of the key contributors of Apple’s success.
